Reflections on the Psalms (Psalm 11)

"The Lord is in his holy temple the Lord is on his heavenly throne.
He observes everyone on earth
his eyes examine them.
The Lord examines the righteous
but the wicked, those who love violence,
he hates with a passion.
On the wicked he will rain
fiery coals and burning sulfur
a scorching wind will be their lot.
For the Lord is righteous,
he loves justice;
the upright will see his face."

Sometimes its hard to understand that God is all knowing and all seeing.  There is nothing that we can hide from God.  We get so good at hiding our own little secrets from others that we decieve ourselves into thinking we can hide things from God.  The Psalm tells us that God examines us and our acts, he cares about how we use our bodies and relate to others daily.

In the text the righteous are contrasted with the wicked, or those who love violence.  We live in an extremly violent culture.  Just reflect on the content of most our our movies and video games.  Its hard to watch anything on tv or in the movies that doesnt contain violence anymore.  We often justify our violence as well by creating a good vs evil scenario where the good guy is justified to use violence.  The Psalm says God does not look to kindly on those who love violence.  God loves justice not violence.  Gods justice is not defined by using violence to overcome evil.  Rather Christ came to suffer and overcome evil and violence with good.  This is a very hard concept for us to grasp when we live in a culture of justified violence.
