Reflections on the Psalms (Psalm 12)

Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore
those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.
Everyone lies to their neighbor they flatter with their lips
but harbor deception in their hearts.

May the Lord silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue
those who say,
“By our tongues we will prevail
our own lips will defend us who is lord over us?”

In this Psalm there is a cry for help, a lament, a prognosis of the current social context and a remembrance of God's faithfulness.  The Psalm packs a big punch in such a short text.  Relational faithfulness is such a huge issue.  Faithfulness in a relationship is what builds trust and allows for open lines of communication.  The psalm tells us that all faithfulness and loyalty have gone out the window, it makes me wonder how our culture relates to this statement. With a divorce rate over 50% even among Christians could we lament about the same thing in our culture?

There is also no sense of humility because everyone is boastful and ready to flatter themselves to the point where they rely on their own words and knowledge over God.  I wonder if apologetics can be viewed in this same light at times.  I love the quote i heard a while back, "defending God is like trying to defend a lion, you don't need to do much just open the cage."
