Reflections on the Psalms (Psalm 22)

"Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the one Israel praises.
In you our ancestors put their trust;

they trusted and you delivered them.
To you they cried out and were saved;

in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

I will declare your name to my people;
in the assembly I will praise you.
You who fear the Lord, praise him!

All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!

All the ends of the earth will remember
and turn to the Lord,

and all the families of the nations

will bow down before him,
for dominion belongs to the Lord
and he rules over the nations."

Its sometimes easy to forget that we have a huge cloud of witnesses that have gone before us.  Its easy to read the Bible and hear the stories of the people in the Old Testament and also in the New Testament, but we often forget about all the ancestors or people that have followed God in-between.  Its because those people put their trust in God that we have heard the story and can have a relationship with God.

As a result we also have a responsibility to pass on our heritage and story of faith and deliverance from sin and bondage.  The Psalm encourages us to declare who God is and praise Him in front of others.  We have the promise that in the end all the nations of the earth will bow before God because all things are under His control and rule.  This psalm is a great reminder of reflecting on our past, being active in the present, and having hope in the future.
