Reflections on the Psalms (Psalm 31)

"Into your hands I commit/entrust my spirit"

Such a simple phrase also repeated by Jesus on the cross:

Luke 23:46:

"Jesus called out with a loud voice,
'Father, into your hands I commit/entrust my spirit.'
When he had said this, he breathed his last."

These were Jesus last words according to the gospel of Luke.  The word commit here means also to entrust.  So the Psalmist and Jesus are both saying they trust God with the outcome which is why they are willing to give God everything they are.  Jesus entrusted himself to the Father and breathed his last breathe.

Trust can be a hard thing.  It can take a long time to earn someones trust and a short time to lose it all.  Child psychologist say trust verse's mistrust is one of the first stages we go through as a child.  We learn to either trust or mistrust things or people based on our experience.  God is faithful and true and His love is unfailing.  We can trust that in Gods hands everything will be ok.
