Reflections on the Psalms (Psalm 39)

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end

and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting my life is.

You have made my days a mere handbreadth;

the span of my years is as nothing before you.

Everyone is but a breath,
even those who seem secure.”

If you could ask God how long your life was going to be and you knew he would answer you, would you ask?  Why would you not want to know?  Why would you want to know?  I would think that if you knew you might live your life differently.  Suppose you realized you only had a week left to live.  You would probably quit your job and enjoy your last week using up the remainder of your savings account and not paying any more bills right?  Or what if you realized you would live until you were 100?  You might start to think a little more about retirement and the health of you body so that you might enjoy all those years.

When it comes down to it our life is but a vapor in the wind compared to all of history.  What matters is not so much about how long we live but how we live and who we live for.  When we realize that our very life is a gift given to us from God we live differently.  We choose to give back our life by living for our creator instead of living for ourselves.  And the beauty of it is that God has designed us to have joy in life by living for Him.

Its a scary thought to realize that we could die at any moment on any day from any number of things.  Yet most of us walk around living like life is a guarantee.  We do this because we fill our lives with way to feel secure.  The word says we think we are secure, we seem secure but nobody can really secure their own life.  We come up with security measures for our houses, our cars, our schedules, our diets, our money and so much more.  But our true security should be in the assurance of our salvation in Jesus Christ.
