Reflections on the Psalms (Psalm 33)

"Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;

it is fitting for the upright to praise him.

Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully, and shout for joy.

For the word of the Lord is right and true;
he is faithful in all he does.
The Lord loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of his unfailing love."

We can all sorts of lessons about worshipping God from the Psalms.  After all the Psalms are a book of worship songs themselves describing God through lyrics.  Here are a few lessons we can learn from this short text:

1. God wants our worship to be joyful.  God doesn't want us to sing half hearted to him or out of a feeling of obligation.  God wants us to sing with joy!  The same kind of joy and excitement we experience when our team wins a championship, or we see our child walk or talk for the first time.  Its that kind of joy we need to bring to corporate worship on Sundays!
2. There has been some debate between denominations as to weather or not we should use musical instruments.  Well we clearly see here the recommendation to use instruments to make music to praise God.
3.  Songs are a vehicle or medium that we use to praise God.  We see that God wants us to sing new songs to Him.  Its ok to sing old songs as well, but God wants us to continue to sing new expressions of praise that come from our hearts.  This means new songs should be a refreshing blessing as we find more ways to express our love for Him.
4.  God is faithful in all He does and and His love is unfailing.  The reason the earth is full of His unfailing love, righteousness and justice, is because we should be the physical manifestation of Christ here on earth!  We should be embodying those characteristics of God living those things out in our lives through our worship to God.  Romans 12:1 says our entires lives are a devotion of worship toGod.
