Reflections on the Psalms (Psalm 34)

"I sought the Lord, and he answered me;

he delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;
their faces are never covered with shame.

This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;

he saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,

and he delivers them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Fear the Lord, you his holy people,

for those who fear him lack nothing."

At first i was afraid i was petrified........ok ok just kidding.

We live in a world that is stricken with fear.  We fear things SO much that we try to protect ourselves from EVERYTHING.  We are afraid of germs so we wash our hands and sanitize things, we are afraid of burglars so we have home security systems, we are afraid of death so we create medicines that will keep us alive longer, we fear of there nations so we spend over half of our nations budget on national defense.

Fear is a natural, healthy and good thing.  But ultimately we really only need to fear God.  Our fear should be one of reverence and awe for our creator and sustainer.  God can deliver us from all other superficial fears because he is ultimately in control.  How awesome is it to think that an angel of God camps around us and delivers us!  Our refuge should be God not earthly contorts that promise a temporary relief from our fears.  The Bible says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom.  What are you afraid of and why?  When you fear things do you put your trust in God or something else?  What would the world look like without all of the products and things we create to relieve our fears?
